The instructions to program the keyless entry fob on one BMW model won’t necessarily work on another BMW model. You can try one of two sets of instructions and see if they work for your BMW. Your aim is to avoid resorting to the dealership, which may charge $50 to $100 for the service. I didn't know there were different types of key fobs like that! I've got comfort access, so the fob stays in my pocket all the time. I just put a new battery in the fob. The car told me the batter was low! Gotta love those control indicators. Comfort access is absolutely great. You can have your nav package.

How to replace the F30 3-Series (2013-2019) key fob battery
This model uses the easy to change BMW Trapezoid Shaped Key. This takes a simple CR2450 coin battery type. You don’t even need any special tools to change this one. Here’s a video showing how to change or replace the battery:

How to replace the E90 3-Series (2006-2012) non comfort access rectangular key fob battery
The rectangular remote has a rechargeable VL2020 battery inside that is recharged when the key is in the ignition. It may die eventually though and need to be replaced. To change this non-comfort access battery, pry apart the key and de-solder the two points that connect the battery to the circuit board inside:
